SBS Farm Blog November

The class farm residential weeks are well under way with lots of fun and mud for all. Gruffalo were unlucky with lots of rain, but the sun came out for a chilly week for Elmer and Paddington.

All wrapped up and with bobble hats and wellies everywhere you looked, the children were having a great time – keeping warm with hot chocolate around the fire and spending some time in the farm cottage, which now has lighting.

Overheard at the gate, a parent was telling another about the farm weeks – “ so great to see them all come out so happy and muddy, and they really sleep well after all the fresh air!”

Elmer and Paddington had made clay models and done lots of work on the farm as well as enjoying outdoor dens and games. The after-school club is getting more bookings and who can wonder why? Making model owls and going out as dark fell to listen to the many owls in the woods is a every special way to find out about the natural world – this was the plan on the day I visited along with macaroni cheese for dinner.

Mrs Strugnall has seen some foxes near the hall when she comes to feed the animals at the weekend, and one even ran off with a Minecraft lunchbox that had been forgotten! (If it is yours, it is in the woods).

Mr Howard is very busy with paths and trying to keep a mud-free route to visit the pigs. As winter approaches, the priority will be to set up planters in the polytunnel, move some of the strawberries in there and start growing salad leaves after Christmas.

Topsoil, compost and yet more slabs are needed, and the farm would so like a shed for Christmas!

Thanks for the many donations – a huge tyre and a planter are the latest donations.
