The First Year 202/26

Happy Birthday SBS Farm!

As the school farm reaches its first birthday, it is time to look back and celebrate all that has been achieved. The farm has become an integral part of the school and a unique source of inspiration and learning for everyone. Caring for the animals has become a feature of After School Club and is starting to be included in curriculum experiences.  In addition, pupils have also taken an active part in developing the farm during the autumn farm “residential weeks”.  Further, After School Club activities and farm residentials are planned for the Spring and Summer.

2025 saw the successful establishment of the first livestock, growing areas and the beginnings of an orchard. Ethel and Mabel, the pigs, along with the six happy hens are currently on holiday. However, two other pigs, Pumba and Bailey, have joined the SBS Farm Family. Pumba (boy) and Bailey (girl) are a brother and sister duo, very kindly donated by an SBS past family. It is wonderful to know that our farm news is reaching the wider community.

Many thanks to the parents who helped on a damp Saturday in January.  Parents levelled the paths to the pig area, filled the raised beds in the polytunnel, which had been built by Mr Howard and generally tidied and organised spaces in the farm.  Planting in the polytunnel will be started by the children in the After School Club this term. A huge thanks must go to all those who have volunteered and donated.

Growing our Farm Family - We are considering adding Guinea Pigs to our family.  If a family could commit to taking them home for weekends and school holidays the farm would like to have guinea pigs – let Mrs Moir if this family could be you?! All equipment, food and bedding would be provided.

SBS farm really has added another dimension to the school’s already renowned ability to build confidence, resilience and an understanding of the natural world for its pupils.

Thank you to everyone for all your help so far!
